ASSIGNMENT: . This relates to the Core IMPACTS Social Sciences question: "How can I understand human experiences and connections?"
The goal of this assignment is to evaluate a social protest and identify the impact of norms and deviance, the consequences of deviance, elements of social movements, and how social change occurs. You will demonstrate this by applying concepts from Lesson 5, the podcast attached to this assignment, and previous lessons to a real-world scenario: a social protest of your choosing. Be sure to choose a protest about a cause that means a lot to you and is something you feel passionate about so you can apply it.
Listen to the podcast carefully and select a real-world social protest event that occurred within the last 50 years, providing details about its place, date, and time and citing your sources for information. Remember, you will use one protest event within a social movement, not the entire social movement. Write a minimum 1200-word essay including the following:
1. Identifying a Protest (Paragraphs 1-2)
- Describe the social protest you chose and provide context about its purpose, participants, and when it happened.
- Identify how the protest illustrates concepts of weak and strong social ties in participation.
- Explain why you chose this particular protest, what it means to you, and why it is something you feel passionate about.
2. Dissection of the Protest Event
- Norms and Deviance:
- Explain the norms present during the protest.
- Identify who deviated from these norms, what the deviance was, and what social sanctions (and types) were applied. Be sure to define the key terms.
- Stages and Collective Behavior:
- Use and cite the textbook (by chapter and page or section) to analyze the stages of the protest.
- Describe the collective behavior involved and explain its significance.
- Framing and Symbols:
- Identify how the protest was framed and discuss the symbols used.
- Discuss how framing impacted public perception and engagement.
- Tactics and Sanctions from the Podcast:
- Use the podcast to identify and discuss the tactics used and whether these behaviors conformed to or deviated from social norms.
- Describe the social sanctions, if any, protesters faced based on the podcast.
- Success or Failure:
- Assess whether the protest was successful or unsuccessful.
- Using insights from the podcast, explain the reasons behind the outcome.
3. Reflection (2 paragraphs):
- Apply a sociological perspective (functionalism, conflict theory, or symbolic interactionism) to analyze the protest and its results/public discourse about it.
- Explain how your understanding of deviance, social movements, and norms can be applied to current or future events.
- Explain how the success or failure affects you and your own life. What stake do you have in the outcome?
