Trying to science

Overview

In the above video, Sage the Bad Naturalist describes an attempt to debunk a video she saw on TikTok. Often, when people say they “did the research,” what they really mean is that they looked up information on the Internet. However, this person conducts experiments to find answers. After you watch the video, write at least a paragraph answering the below questions. I recommend that you answer the questions as you watch the video and then copy and paste into the box provided when you create a thread.

Science is about building knowledge. We can see that Sage already knows quite a lot about decomposition and soil. How much were you able to understand about her initial explanation of why she thought the video was fake? Did you do anything to help you understand what she is talking about? Did you do anything to help you understand and if so, what did you do? For instance, what is “vivipary”?

What did you think about how she set up her experiment? Which steps of the scientific method is she engaging with?

How important is it that she explains how she changed the conditions of the experiment? Does her explanation add to the reliability of her process, or does it take away from its reliability? Explain how you came to your answer.

She confesses that she forgot about the experiment and talks about the assumptions she made in the beginning. How important is it to be honest when seeking information and answers? Would you have been as honest about your process and mistakes as she is? What might stop you from being open about making such mistakes and assumptions?

What did you think about this person’s passion about doing her experiments. Is being passionate a benefit to doing science or a problem? What did this video show you about the process of doing science?
