In a perfect world, what does equality look like to you?
If all restrictions and injustices were removed from society, describe what true fairness and equal treatment would look like to you. This question is inviting you to think about all aspects such age gender, age, race, ethnicity, income, education, etc. Imagine everyone around you regardless of differences has the same rights, respect, and chances to thrive and create a life for themselves. You can talk about personal values and what justice and fairness mean to you.

How can we balance the need for civil rights policies like affirmative action with concerns about fairness and resentment, and what role should businesses play in this effort?
In Racial and Ethnic Groups (Schaefer, 2021), we learn how institutional discrimination keeps racial inequalities in place even when overt racism declines. Policies like affirmative action were designed to address these gaps, yet Schaefer points out they remain controversial (Ch. 5). I recently read this article from The Conversation that explores whether affirmative action truly promotes equality.
How do you think we can create civil rights policies that reduce inequality without increasing division or resentment? What role should companies or schools take beyond what the law requires?

What do you think are the biggest obstacles today for Native American sovereignty, and how could those undermine the ability of the communities to thrive?
As Schaefer emphasizes in Racial and Ethnic Groups (2021, Ch.6), Native American sovereignty sits at the very core of nearly all aspects of Native life, from land claims to self-rule. However, sovereignty typically gets undermined through a combination of litigation, resource extraction, and federal policy. I found this ABC News article about the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of the Indian Child Welfare Act, which brought with it a feeling of relief for tribal sovereignty. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/supreme-court-upho...
Why do you believe Native sovereignty gets challenged so often, and how do these challenges impact the very well-being of Native communities today?

Do you think it's better to fight inequality by focusing on class or race?
Our textbook talks about William Julius Wilson's book, where he argues that class is now a more important factor than race when it comes to understanding inequality in the U.S.
