Overview
- Go to https://wakelet.com and create a free account using your Google or school email.
- Click “Create New Collection.”
- Title it: Week 1 Visual Journal
- You can change the layout style (choose what works for you visually). You do this by pressing, "Design."
- Add at least 5 Visuals
- These can include:
- Photos you take
- Screenshots from news stories
- Drawings, collages, memes, or art
- TikToks, Instagram posts, or headlines
- Other visuals that help you think critically about power, wealth, and status
- You must note where or how you got the image; did you take the photo? Draw it? What link did the headline come from? Etc.
- These can include:
- Write Your Reflection (350–400 words total)
In your Wakelet collection, include a written explanation that does or answers the following:
- Share a bit about yourself and who you are. What is your name? How do you pronounce it? What pronouns do you use?
- Share 1-2 images that make up who you are. What makes you, you? What brings you joy?
- Then, begin addressing the content from the week:
- What systems of power are you noticing in your visuals?
- How do these images connect to this week’s readings or class concepts?
- How might someone miss the deeper structures behind what seems like a “normal” image?
- How do you see your own position or identity reflected in relation to these systems?
Your analysis should reference several pieces of work from the week, and at least one reading, though two is preferred, and demonstrate sociological thinking/utilization of your sociological imagination. You can write one long reflection or short reflections per image, as long as the total is in the 350–400 word range (or more).
