Create a short Visual Journal

Overview

Your visual journal will build on our conversations about how class is structured, how elites reproduce their status, and how wealth and power are made to seem “natural.”

You’ll use Wakelet again to curate visuals and write a short reflection. This is a space to bring theory to life through images and shared analysis; please be deeply reflective and thoughtful when sharing your ideas. You will also want to label and explain the images, ensuring a thorough reflection.

Steps to complete the assignment:

  1. Go to your Wakelet account
  2. Find your (at least) 5 visuals. Your visuals should reflect class dynamics, wealth inequality, elite privilege, and/or meritocracy myths. These can include:
    • Photos you take
    • Screenshots from news or social media
    • Drawings, memes, or digital art
    • TikToks, headlines, infographics
    • Any other visuals that help you think sociologically about wealth, class, and power
Clearly note where each image came from. Did you take the photo? What article or account did it come from? Always cite your sources.

Your written component should analyze how your images connect to the week’s themes and materials. Be sure to:

  • Reference all of the readings in some capacity, then at least one of the videos.

You can use the following questions to help guide your reflection, but please remember this is your work so use these as just a starting point:

  • What systems of class and power are you noticing in your visuals?
  • How do these visuals illustrate economic, cultural, or social capital?
  • How do they connect to the reproduction of elite status?

Your reflection must demonstrate sociological thinking by using concepts from the readings to analyze how class operates visibly and invisibly in everyday life by the images and visuals you've curated and shared.
