In your readings and related discussions, you have examined the relationship between the foundations of theory and social work practice. In general, how we view a problem determines what solutions look like. Just with reframing questions when working with clients, how we frame a problem with a client, organization, community, or other area of focus determines how we approach the solution and, in many ways, what the solution will look like. For example, let’s say we want to help a community mental health agency improve client outcomes. If we approach it from a pragmatism epistemology, we might focus first on safety and ensuring clients have access to and are using prescribed medications. That may mean we focus more on the micro-system and how the individual regulates their medication and makes choices that keep them safe between their appointments. From a social constructionist epistemology, we are more likely to recognize the importance of the social interactions that influence mental health outcomes. In this case, we may encourage the client to bring their family with them and discuss the factors that determine how well the client functions on a daily basis.
