Discussion Board Forum #3: Chapter 4: Gender and Socialization
Gender socialization is the process through which individuals learn and internalize the norms, expectations, and roles associated with their gender in society. For this discussion, watch the video below and address the questions in the prompt.
Watch the video below about gender roles in the family:
Video: How Parents Influence Kids' Gender Roles
Address the following questions about gender socialization and its impacts:
- Family Influence: Reflect on your own upbringing. How did your family members (parents, siblings, grandparents, etc.) shape your understanding of gender roles? Can you recall specific instances where you were encouraged to conform to or challenge traditional gender norms?
- Societal Factors: Beyond family, what other societal influences (e.g., media, peers, education, religion) played a significant role in your gender socialization? How did these factors reinforce or contradict messages from your family?
- Generational Shifts: How do you think gender socialization has changed across generations? If you're a parent or plan to be one, how might your approach to gender socialization differ from that of your parents?
- Challenging Norms: What strategies can individuals and families use to challenge harmful gender stereotypes and promote more egalitarian attitudes? What obstacles might they face in doing so?
- Next, read and respond to at least two of your classmates' posts, contributing to the conversation with thoughtful insights and examples.
