Explain the concept of transformational leadership. Distinguish between transactional and transformational leadership.

Transformational leadership is one of the most current and popular forms to date. Specifically, transformational leadership changes and transforms the individuals involved. Through this, there is a concern with emotions, values, ethics, standards, and long-term goals. As a part of the "New Leadership" paradigm, transformational leadership gives more attention to the charismatic and affective components. Within this type of leadership, leaders are defined as those who motivate followers to reach goals by creating a connection with them. Through being attentive to followers needs, morality is also increased in the process.
Transactional leadership, however, is another form of leadership that can be defined by the type of exchanges made between leaders and followers. Transactional leadership is associated with the exchange dimension, involving leaders who focus more on transactional means for follower motivation rather than on a long-term connection. This type of leadership is not associated with being the most successful in creating trust and mutual benefits.
