Sociology Question

Overview

This assignment is based on the materials covered in Weeks 1-3, especially Lectures 3-5 and the practice exercise we did in Lecture 6. Using these materials (and, if relevant, the accompanying required readings) to guide you, provide answers to the following questions:

1. What is the setting-based membership categorization device (MCD) that the participants treat as omni-relevant for this interaction? Your answer here should include:

a. A descriptive name for this omni-relevant MCD (the collection of categories) as whole.

b. An indication of which specific categories are part of this collection.

c. References to specific places in the interaction (e.g., line numbers or brief quotes) at which each of the specific categories you identified in 1b is observably relevant.

d. Brief descriptions of how we can see that one or more participants is observably treating the corresponding category as relevant in each of the specific places you identified in 1c.

EX: setting-based collection that’s relevant: Park go-er/ Park user. Park.

Biker in the park (helmet), bird watcher (being in the ramble) (a bird watching area) (bird watchers don’t like dogs off a leash) category bound activity for bird watcher , dog walker (leash),

2. What is one further category from a Pn-adequate MCD that one or more participants also treat as relevant at some point(s) during the interaction? (Note: There may be more than one of these MCDs and associated categories; you are only required to identify one. If you identify more than one, the credit you earn for this question will be based on the first one you identify.) Your answer here should include:

a. A descriptive name for the Pn-adequate MCD (the collection of categories) as whole.

b. An indication of which specific category from this collection you have identified.

c. A reference to a specific place in the interaction (e.g., line number[s] or brief quote[s]) at which the specific category you identified in 2b is observably relevant.

d. A brief description of how we can see that one or more participants is observably treating the corresponding category as relevant in the specific place you identified in 2c.

You may feel tempted to also say something more about what is going on in this interaction beyond what is specifically being asked of you in the above questions. Please be aware that we will continue to develop our analysis of this interaction in Assignments 2-4, and you may also choose to return to it in your final paper. You will therefore have ample opportunities to offer more comprehensive analyses of it than we are asking for now. As such, please ensure that you use the space available for this assignment to focus on the questions above, and save your further analyses for when we revist this interaction!

In keeping with the collaborative approach we wish to foster in this course, you are encouraged in developing your responses to the above questions to share ideas with us and your classmates – both during group office hours and in your own time. However, your submission should be written independently, in your own words, and should not be simply a copy or a slightly-altered version of someone else’s submission. In brief, the rule for collaborating is work together, but write alone! If you are in any way uncertain about how to apply this rule in practice, please consult with us for further guidance. The word limit for this assignment is 500 words. Please check the word count on your answers before submitting, as penalties will be applied to submissions that exceed this limit, proportional to how far over the limit you have gone. (Also note that is entirely possible to earn full credit for the assignment while writing under 500 words, so are in no way obligated to use this full allowance!) The assignment is due by 11:59pm on Monday, October 20, and should be submitted using the link provided on Canvas. Early submissions are welcomed.
