PAPER ASSIGNMENT: BRINGING A SOCIAL THEORIST TO DISNEYLANDYou are planning a trip to Disneyland and have chosen to take either Marx, Durkheim, or Weber with you. For this assignment, you will write a paper discussing the chosen social theorist’s perspective on your Disneyland trip. The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with the opportunity to engage with the most widely recognized concepts of these theorists. It also encourages them to explore how these concepts help us understand Disneyland, which is arguably the most recognized American cultural icon in the world. This paper assignment is also designed to help students further develop their critical thinking skills and writing abilities (see section on transferable skills in the syllabus).
This paper is due on Sunday, October 19, by 11:59 p.m. (PST) via Canvas. Please note that no late submissions will be accepted, in accordance with course policy.
Students are expected to only engage with the required course readings (students cannot cite lectures, outside readings, or other resources). In-text citations and the References page must be formatted in ASA style (no cover page is needed). Please refer to the ASA style handout available on Canvas. The References page should be listed on a separate page and does not count toward the page requirement.
Your paper should be five pages long, double-spaced, and written in 12-point Times New Roman font. Margins should be set to one inch, and you should include page numbers. Your paper will be assessed on spelling and grammar, so be sure to proofread your work before submitting.
Students can also refer to the grading rubric on Canvas, which provides additional information on the criteria used to evaluate the paper.
Please review the course policy on plagiarism and the use of ChatGPT and AI tools in course assignments, as outlined in the syllabus. As a reminder, any writing not explicitly identified as AI-generated will be assumed to be the student’s original work. Like other forms of plagiarism, submitting AI-generated work without identifying it is a form of academic dishonesty, as using an AI’s words without citation is “representing another’s ideas or words as one’s own.” Failure to acknowledge any AI-generated content will result in a score of 0 for the assignment. If you need additional support, I encourage you to visit the Writing Center.
