- Compare and contrast the reformist ideals of Teddy Sanchez and the revolutionary ideals of Jose Dolores. Why do the foreign interests support Cruz over Dolores?
- Are their similarities between the characters Jose Dolores, Teddy Cruz, and Sir William Walker with the historical figures William Walker, Vicente Guerrero, Toussaint L'Overture, and other people you have learned about?
- In the film, Jose Dolores states:
"If what we have here is civilization... civilization of white men, then we are better off uncivilized, because, it is better to know where to go and not know how, then it is to know how to go and not know where." What does José Dolores mean by this?
How does this relate to our understanding of the Creation of the Negro and other forms of racial formation that we have discussed in this class?
- At 1 hour and 42 minutes into the film, William Walker and other colonizers were sitting around the table considering how they could get rid of Jose Dolores. William Walker says:
"But you see the man that fights for an idea is a hero. And a hero who is killed becomes a martyr and a martyr immediately becomes a myth. A myth is more dangerous than a man because you can’t kill a myth….Think of his ghost, running through the Antilles (Caribbean Islands). Think of the legends and the songs..."
What does this mean? Were the colonialists successful in defaming Jose Dolores?
- This film was made in 1969, during another moment of anti-colonial resistance in the US, Latin America and other parts of the world.
