Instructions

In this assignment, you will apply your understanding of the elements of culture and major theories of culture by analyzing a cultural experience or practice in your life or community. Your response should be a 2–3 page, double-spaced essay (approximately 500–750 words) in which you explore a cultural phenomenon using the elements and theories of culture discussed in class.

1. Describe a Cultural Practice, Tradition, or Experience
   • Choose a specific cultural activity, practice, tradition, or belief. This may be something from your family, community, religious group, national culture, or even a popular subculture (e.g., sports fandom, gaming, food traditions, festivals). Be descriptive: what does this practice look like? Who participates? When and how does it take place?
2. Identify and Discuss the Elements of Culture Present
   • Explain how the following elements of culture are visible in your example:
     • Language – Are there specific terms, slogans, or phrases used?
     • Material Culture – What objects, clothing, tools, or spaces are involved?
     • Nonmaterial (Symbolic) Culture – What values, beliefs, or meanings are attached?
     • Norms and Values – What behaviors are expected or encouraged in this practice?
     • Use clear examples to illustrate each element.
3. Apply at Least One Theory of Culture
   • Choose one of the following sociological theories discussed in the chapter and explain how it helps interpret or explain your cultural example:
     • Functionalism – How does this cultural practice contribute to social stability or cohesion?
     • Conflict Theory – How might it reflect inequality, power differences, or cultural dominance?
     • Symbolic Interactionism – How do people create shared meaning through symbols and rituals?
   • Your analysis needs to incorporate class terminology and readings.
4. Conclude with a Reflection
   • Reflect on what studying this cultural practice sociologically has revealed. Did it help you see the practice in a new way? What did you learn about the role of culture in shaping behavior or belief?
