Sociology Question

People Watching as Sociological Inquiry

Overview

This 2–3 page (600–900 word) paper asks you to apply sociological theories and concepts from Chapters 4 and 5, by conducting a brief observation of a real-world setting. Your goal is to explore how individuals interact and are socialized through various agents and environments. This assignment combines observation with textbook theory and outside research.

Assignment Instructions

Step 1: Select and Observe a Setting

Choose a specific social setting—either in person (e.g., coffee shop, park, workplace) or virtual (e.g., online gaming forum, Zoom class, TikTok live chat). You will observe people interacting in this setting for at least 30–45 minutes. You are not to participate or record; this is passive observation only. Take notes on:

  • How people present themselves (tone, dress, mannerisms, etc.)
  • Types of social interactions you witness (verbal/nonverbal, conflict/cooperation)
  • Signs of group norms, roles, or hierarchy
  • Evidence of socialization (e.g., behavior shaped by peers, rules, or expectations)

Paper Structure

  1. Introduction (~½ page)
    • Define social interaction and socialization using your textbook. Briefly describe the setting you observed. Present a thesis: How does this setting demonstrate key sociological concepts?
  2. Dramaturgy and the Presentation of Self (~¾ page)
    • Summarize Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical theory. Apply the theory to what you observed. Include at least one external scholarly or reputable media source to support your analysis.
  3. Agents and Stages of Socialization (~¾ page)
    • Identify agents of socialization evident in the scene. Analyze how those agents appeared to shape behaviors or expectations. Cite at least one outside source.
  4. Integration and Implications (~½ page)
    • Discuss how interaction and socialization shape identity and behavior, and reflect on broader implications.
  5. Conclusion (~¼ page)
    • Summarize your main findings and restate your thesis. Emphasize how sociological observation helps us understand the world around us.

  • Length: 600–900 words (approx. 2–3 pages, double-spaced)
