Sociology Question

Families Across the Life Span

In this writing assignment, you will explore how family structures and relationships evolve over the life course, drawing from sociological concepts in both Chapter 13 (Aging and the Elderly) and Chapter 14 (Marriage and Family). You will choose one of the following prompts and write a 2–3 page (600–900 words) paper using at least two sociological theories and one real-life example or case study to support your analysis.

Option 1: Intergenerational Families

How are intergenerational relationships (e.g., grandparents raising grandchildren, multigenerational households) changing in modern society? Discuss what sociological theories help explain these trends and how aging and family dynamics intersect.

Option 2: Changing Definitions of Family

Explore how definitions of family have changed over time. Consider cohabitation, same-sex partnerships, single parenthood, or chosen families. How do these shifts affect the elderly or the institution of marriage? What sociological theories offer insight into these changes?

Requirements:

  • Length: 2–3 pages (600–900 words), double-spaced
  • Cite the textbook and at least one external source (academic article, documentary, news story, etc.)
  • Use APA format for in-text citations and references
  • Include an introduction, at least two body paragraphs, and a conclusion
  • Reference at least two sociological theories

The discussion board is a forum whereby students will address the course material in a reflective and meaningful manner. The purpose of the discussion board is an opportunity for students to engage in an examination and interpretation of the lectures and/or readings and apply them to current events or criminal cases. Some of the material may be controversial and I expect that all students treat each other with respect and value each other’s position (it’s not what your position is, but how you present and support it).

  • Length: Original posts should be 2-3 paragraphs; replies should be 1-2 paragraphs.
  • Quality: All posts must use complete sentences, proper grammar, and meaningful content. Replies must provide substantive feedback beyond simple agreement/disagreement.
  • Grading: Posts evaluated on argument quality, evidence, clarity, timeliness, and grammar. Each discussion is worth 20 points total: 10pts for original posts; 5 points for each reply.
  • Late Policy: No credit for posts after closing dates. Boards will not be reopened except for instructor error.

Your active participation creates a dynamic learning environment for everyone.

Prompt

Watch the Frontline documentary “Aging in America: Survive or Thrive” (available on YouTube or PBS) and reflect on the themes it presents. As you watch, consider how the documentary illustrates or challenges the sociological concepts you’ve studied in Chapter 13, such as the aging population, ageism, elder care, and retirement. In your post (250–350 words), respond to the following:

  1. What was one scene or story in the documentary that stood out to you, and why?
  2. How does the documentary illustrate ageism or stereotypes about older adults? Provide a specific example.
  3. Choose one sociological theory of aging (e.g., disengagement theory, activity theory, or continuity theory) and explain how it helps you interpret what you saw in the film.
  4. What changes—social, political, or cultural—do you believe are necessary to better support aging individuals in the U.S.?
