ASSIGNMENT:
Step 1: First Mission. Dive into the introduction of our textbook. It’s your secret weapon to master the basics of environmental sociology. Don’t have it yet? No worries, click here and get up to speed.
Step 2: Second Mission: Watch Anthropocene: The Human Epoch. This isn’t just a documentary, it’s a visual inventory of the current state of nature. It’ll show you the massive footprint we humans are leaving on our planet. So, grab your popcorn, rally your friends, and get ready for a trip down the rabbit hole (shoutout to all the Matrix fans!). It’s going to be an eye-opener, and trust me, you’re going to want to talk about it!" Important: When trying to play the documentary, you may need to choose "University of North Georgia" and use your own UNG email log in credentials. Let me know if you are running into any issues.
Step 3: Third Mission: Conduct a little bit more research on one environmental issue discussed in the documentary that particularly resonates or concerns you. This could involve examining the loss of old growth forest and deforestation, impacts of practices like lithium or coal mining, analyzing the challenges posed by rising sea levels and their societal responses, exploring the degradation of coral reefs, or investigating the implications of poaching and the ivory trade. Focus on understanding the scale of the issue, including aspects such as environmental damage, pollution, or land transformation. This research and your own thoughts on the documentary will form the basis of your discussion in the Original Post.
Original Post (min 200 words): Let's take it easy for the first discussion. For your initial post do the following:
- Discuss an Issue: Elaborate on the environmental issue you researched in Step 3. Explain why this particular issue is of global significance and stands out among others. Utilize the information gathered during your research to detail the extent of the problem, such as the severity of pollution or environmental degradation associated with it.
- Analyze the Impact: Reflect on the broader implications of this issue for both society and the environment. How is it depicted in the documentary? What additional insights did your research provide? Discuss how the principles and theories of environmental sociology, as introduced in our textbook, may be able to help deepen your understanding of the issue’s impact. Incorporate specific references from the textbook to bolster your analysis.
- Personal Perspective: In addition to the main issue you've discussed, share your thoughts on other environmental challenges that define the Anthropocene era. These might be issues that the documentary did not cover but you consider equally or more significant. Describe the scope of these additional issues and articulate why they are particularly problematic. This section is an opportunity for you to express your personal viewpoints and concerns about various environmental challenges we face today.
