Hailey Smallwood:

What’s wrong with a gender-neutral analysis of globalization is that it makes globalization seem more fair and equal than it actually is. When we talk about globalization in broad terms like trade, jobs, and migration, it sounds neutral on the surface, but these systems are built on existing power structures. Gender shapes who benefits and who ends up carrying more of the risks, and ignoring that just hides real inequality. Globalization creates opportunities, but a lot of those opportunities come in the form of low-paid, unstable labor that women are overrepresented in, especially in factory work, service jobs, and care work. Saying “jobs are being created” doesn’t capture who is doing the work, under what conditions, or who has the least protection. The same goes for migration. Movement across borders isn’t neutral either, and women face much higher risks of exploitation and trafficking within global migration routes. Looking at migration only in economic or policy terms misses how gender shapes vulnerability. Culture and social expectations also matter. Global ideas about women’s rights and work don’t play out the same way everywhere, and globalization can both open doors and reinforce limits depending on local power dynamics. Even in highly developed, globalized countries, women are often expected to succeed in competitive work environments while still carrying most of the responsibility at home, which shows how inequality is built into the system.
