Extra Credit Assignment
Using fieldnote guidelines you create yourself (more details below) and taking into account feedback you received on your fieldnotes from Workshop 1, please conduct a 20 minute fieldwork observation of Dickson Court North (the same site we have been using for observations this quarter). You should select a method to record your notes/observations. After you conduct your fieldwork, please create open codes of your data, develop themes, and present initial findings based on the data. Please be careful to keep in mind the limitations of passive observation (and the observation timeframe - short observation time) when developing your findings.
Fieldnote Template Guidelines As I mentioned in class, the template that we used in workshop 1 is much more structured, including very specific questions, than guidelines typically used for fieldwork observations. Utilizing materials assingned for 1/29, you should develop your own less structured fieldnote template creating categories to guide your observations/reflections but not as structured (we included many very specific questions to answer - this is not necessary)as what the class used for Workshop 1. The Utah Historical Society reading is particularly helpful in indentifying categories of information to observe.
Requirements of the Assignment Create your own fieldnote template Include a brief explanation of why you included each template category Observe Dickson Court North for 20 minutes, record fieldnotes Create open codes from your data Identify themes from your data (content analysis) Identify and write up initial findings based on themes (these may be very "mundane") Please write a brief statement about what you did differently conducting this observation compared to Workshop 1 Submit all of the above to this assignment by noon 3/16 If possible, please include all of the above in one document (not separate documents)
Grading (Maximum deduction 20 points or 0 credit on the extra credit assignment) -10 points for each missing requirement (each item above is considered to be a requirement of the assignment) -10 points for findings that do not take into consideration the limitations of conclusions we may make using passive observation data
