Zane Brooks:
The Opioid epidemic became a political issue when it bypassed our legal institutions. Under the current system, doctors only prescribe a certain amount of opioids for pain relief. As the article detailing how the FDA let pharmaceutical companies slide and "turned a blind eye", the amount of blatant corruption is disgusting. Setting everyday Americans up to fail by hooking them on pain relief and then taking it away without providing any avenues for relief should be criminal, and the fact that it isn't goes to show the influence of money on our system. While yes, we are unsure of the long-term effects of opioids on the body, we can be doubly sure that buying opioids from sources that are not regulated can result in death. I have had friends who have passed away from overdoses caused by drugs laced with fentanyl, and the knowledge that those were completely avoidable makes the current state of affairs unbelievable.
Along with many other people in this class, I grew up in an area called the Herion triangle in northern metro Atlanta. Ignoring the blatant pandemic of opioid usage in areas simply because they are not flashy is a crime in itself, and companies that stand to benefit from the continued dehumanization of patients should be brought to justice.
