ASSIGNMENT: Please respond to the classmates discussion post pertaining to the questions below:
Are global environmental organizations necessary? How do you think transnational corporations would behave if they were not being constantly scrutinized by groups like Earth Action, Green Peace and the World Wildlife fund? Is there reason to believe that corporations would try to limit the environmental damage they do if there were no environmental INGO's.
Nicole Galicia’s Post:
Global environmental organizations play a critical role in shaping corporate behavior and public awareness. Groups like Greenpeace, World Wildlife Fund, and Earth Action act as watchdogs, exposing harmful practices and pressuring corporations to adopt more sustainable policies. Without this scrutiny, many transnational corporations would likely prioritize short-term profits over environmental protection, especially in regions with weak regulations. While some companies might still pursue sustainability for reputational or long-term economic reasons, history suggests that voluntary action alone is inconsistent and often insufficient. External pressure which in turn creates accountability and incentives for better practices. Without environmental INGOs, harmful activities like pollution, deforestation, and resource exploitation could increase, as fewer actors would be monitoring and challenging corporate behavior. Overall, these organizations are essential for balancing economic interests with environmental responsibility and global well-being.
