This paper asks you to examine how sociological thought shaped our understanding of crime. Select two social scientists from the Barkan textbook, explain their theories and the sociological perspective behind each theory, and evaluate what each theory contributes to the study of criminology.
- Select two social scientists discussed in the Barkan text.
- For each scientist:
- Identify their main theory.
- Identify the sociological perspective associated with that theory (for example: structural/functional, conflict, symbolic interactionism, social process, etc.).
- Explain specifically how the theory helps us understand criminology. (Use evidence, examples, or empirical findings where possible).
- Compare and contrast the two theorists and their theories (areas of agreement, disagreement, differences in scope, strengths/limitations).
- Support your analysis with at least three scholarly sources (see requirements below).
