Written Assignment 1 SubmissionWritten Assignment 1: Interviewing a Human Services Professional
Using Chapter 1 as a resource, briefly interview a Human Service Professional- which can include a Social Worker, Psychologist or Counselor, DSS or Case Worker, Support Group facilitator, foster care or group home worker, or other professional helpers to obtain answers to the questions below.
Given COVID-19 circumstances, interviews may be done over phone, videoconferencing, facetime/skype, or using other technology, or in person (if both are comfortable with safety measures in place). A last resort would be to complete the interview by email. Please be respectful of the professional's time and avoid texting her/him/them. Practice professionalism and respect, and remember to formally thank the professional for their time!
Part 1: Interview Questions: Begin your paper with a brief summary of the date, location and circumstances for your interview. Then summarize the answers you received from the following questions. Numbering the responses is acceptable.
- What is the date and means by which you are communicating with this professional? What is the person's title and role? Why did he/she/they decide to enter the chosen profession? (Avoid using full names to protect the privacy of your interviewee).
- Which degree(s) was (were) obtained and how did they choose? Are any in progress?
- What is the theoretical orientation of the professional? (example- some may use cognitive behavioral therapy or more broad approaches to their work).
- What are the job roles and functions as defined by the professional? Which are her/his/their favorite parts?
- What was his/her/their entry level salary range (if comfortable sharing)?
- What opportunities, if any, has the professional had for advancement or salary increases?
- What is his/her view on the differences among the variety of human services professions?
Part 2: Student Experience Summary: then write to reflect on and share the following: what you learned from this exercise, how it impacted your understanding of careers in the human services field, and how you will use this new knowledge as you consider your own career choices.
Students earn one point for each question answered in a satisfactory way (7 points) in Part 1, and 3 points for Part 2 (student summary).
