Overview
HERE IS THE INSTRUCTIONS---> PLEASE NO CHAT GPT OR ANY AL . I HAVE UPLOADED THE TWO INTERIEWS I DID . InterviewsThis is called a "life story" interview. In it, you will be asking people to tell the story of their life using a guided structure of provided questions. Feel free to deviate from the provided questions, especially if coming up with your own follow ups aids you in getting more of the person's life story.
For this assignment, you will interview two people using the questions attached here. In social research, these are of widely varying length, but for this assignment you should aim to have each interview last at least 15 minutes.
FIRST:
- Pick two people to interview separately. Two rules for selection: they can't both be the same type of person (e.g. try to pick people of different ages/backgrounds) and they can't be in this class.
- Meet with the person and interview them. Record the discussion, in a digital format. Ask permission first! And since this is an online class, you can definitely use zoom or some other video chat. Test out how you plan to record the interview before actually doing it, so you know it works.
- Transcribe the interview in detail. Your transcript should show that you made an earnest attempt to gather a lot of information about the person and get them to answer all the questions.
- Write a 500-1,000 word reflection of the interviewing process. Address the following:
- Describe the setting and methods used for the interviews
- How did your subjects “emplot” their stories? Are they at the center of their lives, or do they talk a lot about significant other people?
- What were the recurring themes that came up in the interviews?
- How do the respondents position themselves in relation to other people or groups?
THEN:
- Upload the transcripts of the interviews and the write-up as one file to this dropbox.
- Upload the audio files of your interview to this folder. (Again, test how you plan to record! Without a recording, I can't determine that you actually did the interview so it is required)
Transcribing software, for transcribing manually. (Time intensive, but easier to get right the first time)
How to auto-transcribe using Word Online. (A faster but imperfect process, you will have to go through and correct what it generates. Dr. Rubin prefers this approach.)
Consider the following questions as example prompts for your interview, though you are invited to come up with your own:
- If you had to write a book about your life, what would be the first chapter? The second chapter? How many chapters would it have?
- Who or what had the strongest influence on you growing up? Is that influence still present in your life? Who or what has the strongest influence now?
- What do you do for a living? Is that always what you wanted to do? Describe the path you took to get to this point in your professional life.
- What is something that you’ve discarded from your life? This could be an object, a habit, or something else. Do you regret discarding this, or still feel confident about the decision?
- What is your most favorite tradition? Where does this tradition come from, and what is your opinion of the source?
- Do you have any regular rituals or practices? This could be daily, weekly, yearly, etc. Why are they important to you?
- How should people act when they are young? How should they act when they are middle-aged or older? Why do you think this?
- And…you can always follow up with asking why if the respondent answers simply yes or no
