[Image unavailable: Bronies. Adult fans of my little pony cartoon]This week’s chapterLinks to an external site. on culture introduced you to the concept of Subcultures. A subculture is a segment of society that shares a distinctive pattern of mores, folkways, and values that differs from the pattern of the larger society.

Some examples include Gamers, Lowrider Car culture, Pachucos (1930s and beyond), hippies (1960s), cosplayers, surfers, graffiti artists (aka taggers), skaters, Korean pop fandom or other fandoms, LGTBQ, roller derby, QANON or other political subcultures…these are just a few to give you some ideas.

Directions

In this discussion, you will be examining a subcultural group. Start by searching for a video that focuses on your chosen sub-cultural group and share it with the class. Make sure that your video provides details on the behaviors and values of your chosen subcultural group. It should also contain various aspects of the material culture and language or slang that helps define your subcultural group. If your video does not have all of these elements, you may have to do additional research on the subgroup to answer the questions below.

For your Initial Post due by Sunday 11:59 PM answer the questions below in 3 paragraphs:

  1. Start by including the link to your video for your chosen subcultural group.
  2. Which subgroup did you pick, please provide some general details. Did you already know about this group before this assignment?
  3. What are some materials or objects that are important to your subculture?
  4. Describe the language (words/slang) that they use. Do they have any words or sayings that are of particular importance?
  5. Are there any special events or rituals that are of particular importance to your subculture? Describe them.
  6. What are the values and norms of your subculture? What happens to members who don't adhere to these "rules"?
