Sociology Question

Media Analysis Page – "How the Issue Is Represented"

🎯 Purpose:

This week your goal is to examine how your chosen topic is portrayed in the media—such as, news articles, films, TV shows, documentaries, or social media. This page helps readers think critically about how public understanding of and discourses around educational inequality are shaped.

📝 Instructions:

  • Choose one or two media sources that address your issue (a news article, TV episode, documentary, social media trend, or ad campaign).
  • Analyze how the issue is framed: Is it sympathetic? Blaming? Oversimplified? Eye-opening?
  • Consider whose voice is centered or missing.

✅ What to Include:

  • A title (e.g., “School Segregation in the Headlines,” “Discipline in Popular Media”)
  • A short summary of the media piece(s) (What is it? Where did it appear? Who made it?)
  • A brief analysis (1-2 paragraphs):
    • What message does it send about the issue?
    • Is the portrayal accurate or misleading? Does it align with scientific/sociological discourses or is it "fake news"?
    • Does it raise awareness or reinforce stereotypes?
    • One academic source required to provide sociological commentary on the media sources (can be a class reading)
  • Screenshots, pictures, links, headlines, or quotes
