Overview
A social work intern is conducting a parenting class for clients at her agency. The students asks participants if they have taken a previous parenting class (“Participants’ Prior Training”). After the course is over, the student administers an exam to assess participants’ learning (“posttest skill scores”). The intern is interested in learning if those who have enrolled in previous parenting classes score significantly higher than those who have not. The intern's data file is attached; focus on the "Participants' Prior Training" and "Posttest skill scores" columns.
For this homework, do the following:
State your research question
State your independent and dependent variables
State your research hypothesis
State your null hypothesis
- Conduct a independent t-test in JASP with the intern data. Here is how to do it (also in this week's PowerPoint):
Create a spreadsheet with the intern data so that you can run it in JASP:
- Open Excel or Google Docs
Create two variables: “training” and “scores” – each variable should have its own column
- Enter all the posttest values in the “scores” variable column
In the “training” column, enter “yes” or “no” – make sure the correct response corresponds with the variable in the first column
- Save your file as .csv
If using JASP online: Upload file to OSF
- Open in JASP – Open > My Computer > [Your file]
If using JASP online: Open > OSF > Log in to OSF > [Your file]
Double check that the variables are measured at the correct levels
- Run your T-test (see this week's PowerPoint for details)
Interpret output; be sure to report:
- Your descriptives output table
- Write one - two sentences describing each of the variables
- Your t-test output table
- Your graphs
