Carotid artery stenosis is associated with the occurrence of stroke. In a study of 300 adults in the US, the relationship between the occurrence of carotid artery stenosis of 50% or more (Y, the dependent variable, coded 1 for stenosis >= 50%, 0 for stenosis < 50%) and the following potential predictors of stenosis were recorded:
X1 = Sex (1 = male, 0=female) X2 = cholesterol level (mg/dl) X3 = age (years) An ID number was also recorded for each subject.
Your task: use SAS or R to perform a logistic regression analysis with X1 (sex), X2 (cholesterol level), and X3 (age) as predictors. Remember to follow the strategy described in our notes (section 7.2.6, page 73) –except for the ‘concordance/discordance statistics’, which we did not have time to cover. Use a significance level of 0.05 for hypothesis tests (i.e., 95% confidence for confidence intervals). Write a report (maximum length 2 pages) of your findings. As has been the case for all reports written in the course so far, you must include a title and the following sections: introduction, methods, results, and conclusions. Include relevant tables (well-formatted --do not cut and paste default tables by SAS or R) and figures (these may be cut and pasted from software). Include all relevant and important results (see problem set 6 for reference); the fit of the model must also be addressed. Add an extra page into which you cut and paste your well-formatted, easy-to-read, and well-commented SAS or R code; nothing should appear on this last page except for your code. The code should be as concise as possible: only include steps for which results were included in the report and omit redundant steps or lines of code.
