Statistics Question

Overview

As the principal of a private high school, you are interested in finding out how the training in mathematics at your private school compares with that of the public schools in your area. For the last 5 years, the public schools have given all graduating seniors a mathematics proficiency test. The distribution has a mean of 76 (

μ = 76). You give all the graduating seniors in your private school the same mathematics proficiency test.

The results show a distribution of n = 39 scores, with a mean of 82 (M = 82) and a standard deviation of 11 (s = 11). Using α = .05, What do you conclude?

1. What is the independent and the dependent variable?

2. What is the alternative hypothesis? (Use a nondirectional hypothesis)

3. What is the null hypothesis?

4. What are the critical regions?

5. What is the test result? (Possible bonus points when you complete the test)

6. Will you reject of fail to reject the null based on the test result.
