Overview
COMMENT 1:
"Accreditation plays a critical role in mitigation risk compliance issues in healthcare organizations. Accreditation provides a framework for evaluating the quality of healthcare services organizations provide, and it requires compliance with certain standards and regulations." (Accreditation for Compliance Risk Mitigation in Healthcare - 347 Words | Essay Example, 2024) An example of a place within the last 3 years that had been placed on probation was Tulane school of medicine, due to racism and lack of diversity. "Graduate medical education programs at the Tulane University School of Medicine were placed on probation by a national accreditor, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, (ACGME) last week. The probation follows a public fight over allegations of racism in the school’s graduate program this February stemming from the suspension of Dr. Princess Dennar, who is Black, from her position overseeing a residency program."(Kiefer, 2021) One way to prevent this from happening again is to allow all to be apart of the medical school no matter their background. If someone meets the credentials of being in medical school, they deserve to be there no matter what color their skin is.
COMMENT 2:Accreditation is the process of being recognized as being qualified to perform a certain activity or offer services. In the United States(US), healthcare organizations are accredited by the Joint Commission, the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), and the American Medical Accreditation Program (AMAP). Accreditation helps organizations prevent risk compliance issues by ensuring they meet specific standards and requirements of healthcare practice (Araujo et al., 2020). Accreditation also ensures organizations meet quality standards. One requirement for accreditation is that organizations should provide quality services to meet clients' needs. Accreditation also reduces the risk of liability in organizations. When an organization is accredited, it is evident that it meets the established requirements.
An organization that has been placed on probation recently because of a risk compliance issue is the Harbor UCLA-Medical Center. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education placed the organization on probation in 2023 following allegations against the orthopedics chief, Dr. Louis Kwong. The organization removed Dr.Kwong from his position after three physicians filed a lawsuit against him, alleging that he engaged in sexual misconduct in the operating room, delayed acute surgeries, and made repeated misogynistic comments to staff members (Daily Breeze, 2023). ACGME placed Harbor UCLA-Medical Center on probation because of the incompetence of the hospital leadership because they had ignored the complaints made against Dr. Kwong, who was sexually assaulting employees and unconscious patients. The purpose of accrediting bodies is to ensure healthcare organizations provide quality and safe care to patients. The organization would have prevented the loss of accreditation if it prioritized the safety of patients. The hospital leaders shouldlisten to the complaints against the orthopedics chief and take action. Besides, the hospital would have enforced strict policies to prevent misconduct in the setting.
COMMENT 3: Accreditation plays a critical role in mitigating risk compliance issues in healthcare organizations. It serves as a formal recognition that an organization meets established standards of quality and safety, ensuring that patients receive high-quality care. Accrediting bodies, such as The Joint Commission (TJC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and others, set stringent requirements that healthcare providers must adhere to in areas like patient safety, infection control, and emergency management.
Accreditation ensures that healthcare organizations adhere to best practices and standardized procedures, reducing variability in care delivery, accredited organizations are often required to engage in continuous quality improvement, regularly updating their practices to meet evolving standards.Accreditation involves external review and oversight, holding healthcare organizations accountable for their performance and compliance with regulations.
In February 2021, the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus was placed on probation by CMS following an incident involving patient safety. The specific issue that led to this action was the improper discharge of a patient who was left outside in freezing temperatures wearing only a hospital gown. This event raised significant concerns about the hospital's discharge procedures, patient safety protocols, and overall quality of care.
The hospital's protocols for safely discharging patients were not followed, leading to the patient's exposure to unsafe conditions,There were gaps in staff training regarding proper discharge procedures and handling of vulnerable patients.
The hospital could have developed and enforced stricter discharge policies to ensure that all patients are discharged safely and with appropriate clothing and arrangements for transportation. Regular training sessions focused on patient safety and discharge procedures would have better prepared staff to handle such situations appropriately. Finally,Implementing regular audits of discharge processes and continuous monitoring could have identified and corrected lapses before they resulted in adverse outcomes.
COMMENT 4:
Accreditation plays a critical role in ensuring compliance with established standards and mitigating risk within healthcare organizations (Hussein et al., 2021). Accrediting bodies, such as the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), evaluate healthcare facilities to ensure they adhere to predetermined criteria and maintain a high level of quality in their operations. This evaluation includes assessing the organization's training programs, infrastructure, patient care, and overall adherence to regulations. A good example of accreditation affecting a healthcare organization involves Roger Williams Medical Center, a teaching hospital placed on probation by the ACGME (Arditi, 2020). The probation stemmed from the closure of the dermatology program, as its residents were no longer receiving training at Roger Williams, prompting concerns about the hospital's overall program operation (Arditi, 2020).
The loss of accreditation or probationary status could be prevented through various measures. First, ensuring consistent communication and collaboration between the hospital and affiliated educational programs is crucial to avoid disruptions in training programs (Hussein et al., 2021). Addressing staffing issues within specific programs, like the dermatology program's constant turnover in directors, is vital for program stability and sustainability (Hussein et al., 2021). Additionally, maintaining robust internal oversight mechanisms, regular self-assessments, and addressing compliance gaps proactively can help identify issues before they escalate to the point of jeopardizing accreditation (Hussein et al., 2021).
COMMENT 5:In our healthcare organization our risk management program diligently addresses the intricacies of social media usage and the preservation of patient information privacy. Social media poses a substantial risk in the realm of patient confidentiality, necessitating proactive measures to maintain ethical standards and legal compliance (Al-Balushi, 2020). Firstly, our organization emphasizes comprehensive staff education and training regarding social media policies and their implications on patient privacy. This educational initiative is vital in promoting a culture of awareness and responsibility among employees (Al-Balushi, 2020). I have personally observed the effectiveness of workshops and interactive training sessions in cultivating a keen understanding of the boundaries between professional conduct and personal expression on social media platforms (Al-Balushi, 2020).
Secondly, the healthcare organization employs a stringent monitoring system to oversee staff engagement with social media platforms. Regular audits and surveillance help in identifying any potential breaches or inadvertent disclosures of patient information (Tariq & Hackert, 2023). This proactive approach ensures swift intervention and appropriate disciplinary action, fostering a sense of accountability and reinforcing the significance of adhering to established guidelines (Tariq & Hackert, 2023). Additionally, our organization employs encryption mechanisms and secure data storage systems because they are meticulously implemented to mitigate unauthorized access and protect sensitive data (Al-Balushi, 2020).
COMMENT 6:
In a typical healthcare organization, the risk management program addresses social media and patient information privacy through a comprehensive framework designed to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory standards such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This framework includes policies, procedures, training, and monitoring to safeguard patient information and mitigate risks associated with social media use by staff.
Three examples of risk management steps health care organization can take to further protect patient information:
- Enhanced Data Security: Implementing advanced encryption protocols for both stored and transmitted patient data can further protect against unauthorized access. Ensuring all data, including backups, are encrypted, adds an extra layer of security.
- Regular Vulnerability Assessments: Conducting regular security audits and vulnerability assessments can help identify and address potential weaknesses in the organization's information systems. This proactive approach allows for timely updates and improvements to security measures.
- Implementing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Requiring multi-factor authentication for accessing patient information systems can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access. MFA provides an additional verification layer beyond just passwords, making it more difficult for attackers to compromise accounts.
In conclusion, a robust risk management program in a healthcare organization is crucial for addressing the challenges associated with social media and patient information privacy. By implementing clear policies, strict access controls, and comprehensive incident response protocols, healthcare organizations can significantly mitigate the risks of data breaches and unauthorized access.
