Must use EXCEL
- For a categorical variable
- Create a barchart
- Construct a Pivot table of counts and/or percents
- For a quantitative variable
- Create a histogram or boxplot.
- Calculate the mean and standard deviation and the five-number summary
Use the data sets attached
Step 3: Create your Graphs and Summaries
You will create your graphs and summaries based on your chosen dataset and variables.
- Create a barchart.
- Plot must include a descriptive title and clean axis labels.
- Construct a Pivot table of counts and/or percents and provide it in your post.
- Create a histogram or boxplot.
- Plot must include a descriptive title and clean axis labels.
- Calculate the mean and standard deviation and the five-number summary provide them in a table and paste them in your post.
- Warning - Have some fun with color but avoid the “3-D” options.
- Take a screenshot of each graph/table. Save as an image so that you can upload them to your discussion post. See tutorial on how to upload an image to the discussion board.
Step 4: Explain your analysis and Submit your Original Post
Use the "Original Post - Outline & Prompts" to Create Your Original Post
- Use the title "Week 1 Data Analysis"
- Use the same headers as listed below (e.g., "About the Data") in your post.
- Thoughtfully respond to each question and prompt in the bulleted list below each heading in your post.
Original Post - Outline & Prompts
Week 1 Data Analysis
About the Data
- What is this dataset “all about”?
- How many variables are in the dataset?
- How many individuals does it represent?
- What is the individual?
Describing a Categorical Variable
- Include a picture of your barplot and your pivot table of counts/percents then describe your categorical variable.
- What does it represent?
- What is interesting or surprising about this variable?
- Why did you choose it?
- Which group is the most/least frequent?
Describing a Quantitative Variable
- Include a picture of the histogram or boxplot and your table of descriptive statistics then describe your quantitative variable.
- What is the shape, center and spread of the distribution? Are there any outliers?
- Provide some context:
- What does it represent?
- What is interesting or surprising about this variable?
- Why did you choose it?
