MGMT180 W4 Assign1

Overview

The importance of correlation in business decision-making shows up in two main ways - people either overvalue factors or undervalue them. Both lead to poor decisions. This occurs because people frequently treat a correlation as a cause. For example here are four common business correlations:

  1. Doing a good job correlates with getting a pay raise.
  2. Hiring a good salesperson correlates with seeing more sales.
  3. The conscientious personality type correlates with fewer process errors.
  4. Spending more on research correlates with more innovation.

Yet, in each case, one does not automatically cause the other. Other factors come into play. Some we know. Some we don’t. So, simply, the importance of correlation in business decision-making processes means better understanding of these factors https://omegazadvisors.com/2018/02/05/importance-o...

For this assignment: This assignment asks you to evaluate correlations between variables in the Operations dataset. If you are unfamiliar with Excel, these will walk you through the required steps to calculate correlation. You may also consult other online resources to help with this assignment.

    • Create a correlation matrix of at least 3 variables in the operations dataset. You may need to code qualitative data if you’d like to include that information in your analysis.
    • If you were to create a scatterplot of the relation between these variables, which might you expect to most easily approximate a straight line?
    • If you were a business manager using this data, how might you use any of this information to have a better understanding of your business? What do these correlations tell you about these variables and their relation to one another? Which provide useful information and which do not? Your response to this question should be approximately one paragraph in length.
