This week we will use Excel to perform statistical computations. To complete this assignment please complete the following Step 1: Download the data sets Go to the textbook's companion website: Once you arrive at this page, you will a link to Data sets in the center Click on the blue link for data sets, this will download to the location you have set downloads to arrive at (typically a downloads folder). Please be sure that you save this folder to a convenient and easy to find location on your computer's hard drive. Step 2: Analyze the data Open this week’s data set Click on Chapter 4 Data set 1. This file should automatically open in Excel. If it does NOT open in Excel first open excel then choose File..Open and choose the data set from the location you have saved your data. Select Chapter 4 data set 1 This data includes two columns Height (in inches) and weight (in pounds) Compute summary statistics Use the steps presented in the text "Using the amazing data analysis tools to compute Descriptive statistics" or the video presented in the week 1 reading and resources to compute the mean and median for each column Once you have run the necessary calculations, you will have two tables of summary statistics, one for height and one for weight. Create a document for submission including the following information: Highlight, copy and paste all tables into a Microsoft word document Answer the following questions 1. For each of the two columns do you suspect that there any outliers in the dataset that have an effect on the mean? If so, please identify the outlier(s) and explain your rationale for identifying the datapoint(s) as an outlier(s). If not, please provide a rationale as to why there are no outliers in the column. 2. In your opinion, which measure of central tendency is the most appropriate to use for each column, be sure to justify your reasoning 3. Would it be reasonable to compare the two variables directly using either the mean or median? For example, would you compare the median height to the median weight? Why or why not? Explain your reasoning |
