Statistics Question

Overview

NO AI AT ALL

Purpose: Remember that descriptive statistics are used to describe the variables in a study. They provide simple graphical and numerical summaries about our data. Inferential statistics are used to determine whether the results from sample data can be generalized, or applied, to the entire population. We use probability to reach conclusions about the population using sample data. Inferential statistics focus on making predictions about a population, testing these predictions with sample data, and generalizing about the population based on a sample of those data. Chapters 9, 10, 11 introduced statistical procedures (t-tests) to test hypotheses about population data. This learning activity will assess your ability to: (a) state hypotheses, (b) analyze data using statistical software (SPSS), (c) interpret statistical output, and (d) write APA style conclusions.

Skills: The purpose of this assessment is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course and in your professional life beyond school:

  • becoming familiar with the statistical program, SPSS
  • analyzing data using statistical software
  • calculating confidence intervals and effect size
  • interpreting and communicating statistical results

Knowledge: This assessment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in elementary statistics:

  • stating null and alternative hypotheses
  • entering and analyzing data using SPSS
  • interpreting statistical output
  • reporting statistical findings in APA format

Task: For this learning activity, we will be using the Statistical Program for the Social Sciences, SPSS. You will need to sign up for the SPSS 30-Day Free Trial using your LACCD email accountLinks to an external site.. You will also need access to a computer with Microsoft Word. Remember that everyone has access to Office 365 (which includes Microsoft Word) in our Canvas course in the left navigation.
