Overview

Purpose: Remember that descriptive statistics are used to describe the variables in a study. They provide simple graphical and numerical summaries about our data. Inferential statistics are used to determine whether the results from sample data can be generalized, or applied, to the entire population. We use probability to reach conclusions about the population using sample data. Inferential statistics focus on making predictions about a population, testing these predictions with sample data, and generalizing about the population based on a sample of those data. Chapter 12 introduced the ANOVA statistical procedure to test hypotheses about population data. Chapter 14 introduced correlation and regression analysis to determine the linear relationships between variables. Chapter 15 introduced the Chi-Square statistical procedure. This learning activity will assess your ability to: (a) state hypotheses, (b) analyze & interpret data using statistical software (SPSS), (c) write APA style conclusions, (d) conduct & interpret correlational and regression analyses, and (e) describe the Chi-Square statistical procedure.

Skills: The purpose of this assessment is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in this course and in your professional life beyond school:

  • becoming familiar with the statistical program, SPSS
  • analyzing data using statistical software
  • calculating confidence intervals and effect size
  • interpreting and communicating statistical results
  • conducting & interpreting correlational and regression analyses
  • describing Chi-Square procedure

Knowledge: This assessment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in elementary statistics:

  • stating null and alternative hypotheses
  • entering and analyzing data using SPSS
  • interpreting statistical output
  • reporting statistical findings in APA format
  • conduct & interpret correlational and regression analyses
  • describe Chi-Square procedure

Task: For this learning activity, we will be using the Statistical Program for the Social Sciences, SPSS. You can access the file to open SPSS through Amazon Web Services in the SPSS Module
