Overview
As described in your text, we will compute measures of variability using Excel. We will complete Exercise 2 in the same way we completed Exercise 1 in Week 1:
- Open Chapter 12 Data set 2 - This data set records the number of times a Male raised their hand in class versus the number of times a female raised their hand in class for 15 different classes (male data) and 17 different classes (female data). Please note the number of data points doesn't need to be the same for each group.
- Once you have opened this data set, you will use the steps found in the course text ("Using the amazing data analysis tools to computer descriptive statistics).
- Once you have run the necessary calculations, you will have two tables, one for males and one for females. Copy and paste these tables into your final word document.
- Provide a brief discussion as to what the results mean and answer the following questions: (25% of this assignment)
- Provide a description as to what each measure of variation (standard deviation, variance and range) measures for both males and females.
- Explain which variable (Male or Female) contains more variation and use at least one measure of variation to justify your response.
- Provide a description as to what each measure of variation (standard deviation, variance and range) measures for both males and females.
Now let's take a look at another data set collecting data for patients before and after mental health intervention.
In Excel, open your Excel file named Chapter 13 Data Set 2. This data set gives an overall wellness score for patients before mental health intervention and post mental health intervention. A higher score indicates better overall wellness.
- Compute the summary statistics for both before and after intervention.
- Once you have run the necessary calculations, you will have two tables, one for before intervention and one for after intervention. Copy and paste both tables into your final Word document.
- Provide a brief discussion as to what the results mean and answer the following questions: (50% of this assignment):
- What kinds of observations do you make about the patients before intervention and after intervention? Use at least one measure of center from each data set to support your reasoning.
- Is there less variability on pre or post-intervention? Use at least one measure of variation to justify your response.
- Would you classify the intervention as successful? Why or why not? Include at least one measure of center and one measure of variation comparison in your justification.
- What kinds of observations do you make about the patients before intervention and after intervention? Use at least one measure of center from each data set to support your reasoning.
