Topic: Seasonal Pricing Trends and Inventory for School Supplies
Description: This project focuses on analyzing monthly sales data from a school supplies store to uncover patterns in sales throughout the year. The goal is to identify the months with the highest and lowest sales and analyze how different products perform over time. Basic mathematical measures, such as the mean, range, and standard deviation, will be used to summarize the sales data. These measures will help understand the average sales, the variability, and the differences between the highest and lowest sales months.
Two visual charts will be created:
- A bar chart to display sales by month
- A pie chart to show the percentage of total sales by product category
This analysis will assist the store in making informed decisions regarding inventory levels, marketing campaigns, and restocking strategies during peak sales periods. By utilizing data-driven insights, the store can better manage stock and respond effectively to seasonal demand fluctuations.
Business Decision:
The store needs to determine optimal inventory management strategies—specifically, how much stock to maintain for each product and when to run promotional campaigns based on seasonal trends.
Data Needed:
To inform the decision, the following data will be required:
- Monthly sales data (broken down by product category)
- Product categories (e.g., pens, notebooks, backpacks)
- Inventory levels (measured monthly)
Data will be collected from existing open sources or hypothetical monthly sales data will be created.
Data Analysis Tools:
Excel will be used to input the sales and inventory data. The following calculations will be performed:
- Mean to calculate average monthly sales
- Range to identify fluctuations between the highest and lowest months
- Standard Deviation to measure the consistency of sales over time
Additionally, bar charts and pie charts will be created to visually represent trends in sales and product category distribution.
Concepts from Textbook:
- Describing Data: Numerical Measures (mean, range, standard deviation) will be applied to summarize the sales data.
- Displaying and Exploring Data using visual tools (bar charts and pie charts) will help to identify patterns in sales and inventory.
Presentation Components:
-
Paper:
A 2-3 page paper will describe the business decision, the data used, and the analysis results. The paper will reference at least two key concepts from the textbook. -
Visuals:
At least two graphs/charts will be created in Excel:- Bar Chart to show sales by month
- Pie Chart to display the percentage of total sales by product category
-
Excel File:
The Excel file will contain the data, analysis, and charts, with clear headings and labels to describe each component.
Submission Requirements:
- Paper (2-3 pages, including APA citations)
- Excel file (with data, analysis, and charts)
