Project 1

Assignment Content

  1. Question <bdi></bdi>This project is a lab in which you will collect data on a spring that is hanging vertically. Specifically, we will explore the relationship between the amount of mass attached to the spring and the length of the spring.
Before you begin, please watch this introductory video describing the process of data collection in this project: Collecting the data video
Click the link to collect your data for 5 different masses. Be sure to write down your mass and length measurements. Mass and Spring Data Collection Website
Use either JMP or Stat Crunch to create a data table with your data. (Alternatively, you could use this online calculator. It's a little clunky but it does work. Here's a video of me doing an example with iT

    QUESTION #1
Make a scatterplot in JMP or StatCrunch and use it to describe the association between the two variables.
    • Use the mass as the x variable and the length as the y variable.
    • In your response, be sure to discuss form, direction, and strength using the value of the correlation coefficient.
    QUESTION #2
Use your chosen program to find the line of best fit (aka regression line, least squares line), and write it below.

So far, you've collected some data, verified that the relationship is line, and had the computer perform some number crunching to find the line of best fit. The next two problems illustrate what we want you to be able to do with this line. You should be able to
    • Identify the slope and use its value to understand what happens to the y-variable as the x-variable changes. You should be able to communicate that rate of change in the context of the problem.
    • Use your line to predict the y-variable from a given value of the x-variable.
    QUESTION #3
What is the slope of your line? Write a sentence that interprets the slope as a rate of change between the two variables. (Be sure to write about the mass and the length of the spring (not "x" and "y"), and be sure to use the value of the slope in your response)
    QUESTION #4
I collected some data using the simulation. Once with the spring constant as small as it can be, and once with the spring constant as large as it can be. Here are my lines of best fit:

Smallest Spring Constant: [Image unavailable: stack l e n g t h with hat on top space equals space 59 space plus space 0.25 space cross times m a s s]
Largest Spring Constant: [Image unavailable: stack l e n g t h with hat on top space equals space 48 space plus space 0.11 space cross times space m a s s]

Use the space below to answer these questions:
    • Use these two equations to identify the rate of change between the mass and the length for both springs.
    • What appears to happen to the rate of change if we increase the spring constant?
