STATCRUNCH PROJECT

In this class STATCRUNCH PROJECTS make up a total of 40% of your grade (this includes your final exam project). This first Statcrunch assignment requires you to select a data set to be used for future Statcrunch projects. I am aware that there are many tools out there that will collect and analyze data. However, you will only get credit if you use Statcrunch, other programs will not be allowed.

SEARCH DATA FROM STATCRUNCH:

  1. You will start by searching data sets on Statcrunch. However, since there are more than 5,000 data sets, this can be an overwhelming task. For this reason, I have created a list of data sets from the 5,000 that you can look through. From THIS LISTLinks to an external site. of data sets, select three that are interesting to you. To deicide if a data set is interesting, you may want to go to https://www.statcrunch.com/Links to an external site. and click on "Data sets" then search a particular data set to see if you understand it. When you look at THIS LISTLinks to an external site. of data sets, if someone's name appears next to a data set, that means that particular data set is no longer available. Select data sets that have not yet been assigned. To submit your data set selections, keep reading the instructions on step 2.
  2. To submit your data selections, fill out THIS FORMLinks to an external site.. Since no two students can have the same data set, data assignments will be given on a first come first serve basis. Once I get your form, I will start assigning data sets by looking at the time stamp on the form. Once a data set has been assigned to you, then no other student can take it. Refer to THIS LISTLinks to an external site. for assigned data sets. Once you see your name next to a data set, then you are done with this assignment. That's all you have to do, for now. Please give me 1 - 3 days after this assignment's deadline to record your grade. This will not automatically happen, I have to manually input your grade for this assignment.

  3. Thinking ahead. You will have to write a full report this semester where you will include both descriptive and inferential statistics so make sure the data set you selected is actually interesting to you.

Continue reading below only if you do not like any of the data sets on my list or if you are interested in collecting your own data.

WANT TO LOOK FOR OTHER STATCRUNCH DATA?

  1. If you are not interested in my data suggestions then you can go to the DATA SETS on Statcrunch and look for other data. However, there are important requirements in order for your data to be approved. You must have a data set with more than 30 responses. You must select a data set with at least two categorical variables AND at least two quantitative variables. And you may not work with data sets that have already been used in this class on quizzes, checkpoints, examples or discussion board labs. Once you have found one that is interesting to you, make sure that it is not already included on THIS LISTLinks to an external site. of assigned data sets. Go ahead and submit your data selection, by filling out THIS FORMLinks to an external site.. Below is a screen shot of how you can find the StatCrunch Data Sets. For this assignment, your data set has to come from Statcrunch.

Please give me 1 - 3 days after this assignment's deadline to record your grade. This will not automatically happen, I have to manually input your grade for this assignment.

WANT TO COLLECT YOUR OWN DATA?

This is probably the hardest way of getting your data but it can also be the most meaningful. Think of a research topic, something that interests you. Next you MUST create a survey through STATCRUNCH. This survey must have a minimum of 4 questions, however by asking more than 4 questions you'll have more options later on when working on future Statcrunch projects. The questions you ask must be meaningful in answering your research question.

  1. An important requirement in order for your survey (and eventually the data collected from your survey) to be approved is to ask questions resulting in at least two categorical variables AND at least two quantitative variables.
  2. You need a minimum of 45 people (selected at random) to respond to your survey to have a sample size of at least 45. Follow the statcrunch instructions below to create your own survey that will be sent out to a random sample of family and friends over social media, email or text (you decide).
  3. Watch this VIDEOLinks to an external site. to learn how to create a survey. Once you have created your survey, provide me with the survey link at the bottom of THIS FORMLinks to an external site. Remember that you need to ask at least 4 meaningful questions but asking more will give you more options later when working on your Statcrunch project.
  4. After one week, be prepared to also share your data with me. Watch this VIDEOLinks to an external site. to see how to create a sharable link of your data. Once you have your data, provide me with your data link at the bottom of THIS FORMLinks to an external site. (please include your survey link again).

Do not share your survey with anyone in this class or in my other stats classes. Your data should be unique.
