Overview
In statistics, it is common to collect data, look at the data and perform some kind of analysis on it. That is what this project is all about. In part 1 of this project, we will gather data from bags of M&M’s, look at the data – both our own individual data and the class data, and then look at some preliminary statistics. As we look at the data, you may form some observations. Does your bag of M&M’s look like an expected bag according to M&M’s?
Here is the expected distribution of M&M’s.
- 24% Blue
- 20% Orange
- 16% Green
- 14% Yellow
- 13% Red
- 13% Brown
This project will be a formal paper. It is important to be able to communicate clearly and concisely in the business world. Correct spelling and grammar is important.Make sure your paper is well organized and that you cover all the necessary information. The paper should have the following:
- Typed, 12 point Ariel font
- Double Spaced
- Introduction
- A full discussion of all the calculations in the directions below.
- Both required graphs.
- The table as directed in part 6 of the directions below.
- Conclusion
You will save your paper as a Word document and upload it to Blackboard in the Project Part 1 drop box.You will also submit a copy of the rubric at the same time.Feel free to contact me with any questions!
Directions:
- Obtain a bag (any size) of plain M&M’s.Record the amounts of each color and the total number of M&M’s in the bag.
- In the dropbox labeled “M&M Individual Data”, please fill out and submit the Excel worksheet “M&M Individual Data” for your bag of M&M’s. It is very important that all students submit their data. The failure to submit this data on time will lead to a 10 point deduction in your project.
- Create a pie graph based on your M&M’s bag using Excel.State any observations.
- Pick a color from the choice that the plain bag of M&M’s has.You will need to state the color you chose in the paper.
- Obtain the file labeled “Class Data – Stat 1400 XXX” from the Project folder in Blackboard.(I will send out an email when I have all the data).
- In the data from the class, look at the data for your selected color. You will need to calculate the percent / relative frequency of your color for each observation given in the spreadsheet. This table that you have created will need to be submitted in the paper. You will include it at the end of the paper labeled “Percentage of the color _______ M&M’s.”All data necessary needs to be included, such as number of your color for each observation, the total number of M&M’s in each bag, and the calculated percentage.Since the calculation will be initially in decimal form, you may format the column as a percent or you may create another column that change the decimal value into percent form by multiplying by 100.
- Produce a histogram based on the above table, using the percent values calculated in the table above. This histogram should have 6 classes.Show the calculations for class width, and include a table that shows the classes, the midpoint of each class, and the frequency of each class. State your observations of the histogram.
- Also based on the table of percent values, calculate the mean, the appropriate standard deviation, and the 5 number summary. Are there any outliers?Discuss and show all calculations. You may either do the calculations in Excel or in your calculator.
- Based on the above information, what can you say about the distribution shape of your particular color of M&M’s?Explain your reasoning.
- Calculate the total amount of your particular color of M&M’s and the total number of M&M’s of the class, to get the overall percentage of your color.State any observations that you made regarding your individual percentage, the mean percentage calculated in part 8, the overall percentage that you just calculated and the expected percentage given in the beginning of these instructions.Do you see any evidence of the Law of Large Numbers at work?
