Instructions for Project 1
Likert Scales allow us to quantitatively measure values, attitudes, knowledge, and perceptions. In this project we will be using a Likert scale to make interesting comparisons between different groups of people. Likert scales always use multiple items measure a single idea. Here we will use a 3-item Likert scale to complete an original research study, analyze the results using Excel, and present our findings in a memorandum.
Your study can address any topic you are curious about – politics, sports, popular culture, religious/spiritual beliefs, attitudes toward drugs, video games, attitudes toward diet and health, food preferences, etc. Please be mindful to protect your respondents and keep it PG-rated. It is okay to ask about attitudes, but not about illegal activities.
Step 1. Watch the Project 1 Walkthrough recording and review the instructions for the project
These will help you design an original research study that uses a Likert scale for the dependent variable and compares two groups for the independent variable. The questionnaire will contain 4 items (a 3-item Likert scale and one question that will be used to categorize the participants into two groups.)
Step 2. Design your study and submit your design by entering your information into the quiz entitled "Project 1 Proposal - Enter design information into this quiz prior to completing Project 1" via the quizzes tab.
Step 3. Once your study is finalized and approved, gather the data, enter it into Excel, and complete the analyses in Excel including graphing the results
The Project 1 Walkthrough will demonstrate how to complete the analyses
Step 4. Submit your report (in a pdf format) in the Project 1 - Report assignments tab.
Due Dates
- Please see the Course Calendar Schedule for due dates for both the proposal (submitted via the quizzes tab) and the full Project 1 - Report (submitted in a pdf format via the assignments tab).
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this discussion, you will have:
- Generated constructs of interest and operationally defined those constructs through the creation of questionnaire items
- Utilized Likert scale techniques to quantify qualitatively rich information characterizing attitudes, beliefs or other characteristics.
- Gathered, organized, analyzed data from the respondents
- Entered data into Excel and completed analyses and created graphical representations of your data in reporting the results.
