Overview
I am tryin to gather more data for my dissertation. using the template I need some of these charts created, I will need the word and excel showing where the data came from
- Physical Violence/Assault: This is a core component and often the most studied. Data can include police reports of common assault, assault with injury, and serious wounding, as well as hospital or emergency room admissions for related injuries.
- Intimate Partner Homicide (Femicide): While overall homicide rates saw varying trends, some areas reported an increase in domestic violence-related killings.
- Psychological/Emotional/Verbal Abuse: These forms of abuse were widely reported to helplines and are crucial to capture, as the stress and isolation of lockdown were major exacerbating factors.
- Sexual Violence: This can include rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and other sexual offenses within the household.
- Economic/Financial Abuse: This type of abuse includes restriction on use of financial resources, stealing money, or preventing the victim from working. The economic strain of the pandemic likely affected this category significantly.
- Child Abuse and Neglect: With children out of school and isolated from mandated reporters (like teachers), instances of child abuse and neglect were a significant concern. Data from child protective services and pediatric hospital visits are relevant here.
- Elder Abuse and Neglect: The elderly were also a vulnerable population, experiencing increased risk of physical, emotional, financial abuse, and neglect, particularly those dependent on caregivers.
- Digital/Cyber Abuse: The increased reliance on technology during lockdown led to an increase in technology-facilitated abuse, such as stalking and harassment via digital platforms.
- Breaches of Domestic Violence Orders: Capturing data on the violation of existing protective orders can provide insight into the challenges victims faced in securing safety during lockdown measures.
Key Considerations for Your Dissertation
- Data Source Discrepancies: Be aware that police-recorded crimes sometimes showed a decrease in certain categories (like minor assaults) while helpline calls and third-party reports increased, possibly because victims were trapped at home with abusers and unable to report to police. Ensure you consider multiple data sources to get a complete picture.
- Victim-Offender Relationship: Analyze data based on the relationship type (current partner, ex-partner, other family members) as trends varied significantly between these groups.
- Contextual Factors: Your analysis should also consider factors like increased unemployment, financial insecurity, stress related to childcare, and increased substance use, as these are all established predictors and exacerbating factors for domestic violence
Hate Crime
Anti-Asian Hate Crime During the COVID-19 Pandemic: As COVID-19 proliferated across the United States, Asian Americans reported a surge in racially motivated hate crimes involving physical violence as well as other offenses.
