The regression equation is:
Height = 6.5235(Age) + 75.9137

Input and output variables: The input variable (x) is Age in years. The output variable (y) is Height in centimeters. The value 75.9137 represents the predicted height at age 0 (the y-intercept).

Correlation coefficient: r = 0.9898 This indicates a very strong positive linear relationship between age and height. As age increases, height increases nearly perfectly linearly.

Coefficient of determination: R² = 0.9797 This means about 97.97% of the variation in height can be explained by age using this linear model. This shows the model fits the data extremely well.

Appropriate interval of ages: This regression equation is appropriate for ages 1 to 11 years, since that is the range of the data used to build the model. Predictions outside this range may not be reliable.

For your initial Post:

Create a scatterplot with the linear regression equation displayed within Excel. State what the regression equation is within your written post.

Define your input and output variables. What do each of the variables in your equation represent in the context of this scenario?

State the value of the correlation coefficient (round to four decimal places). Interpret the meaning of this value within the context of this scenario.

State the value of the coefficient of determination (round to four decimal places). Interpret the meaning of this value within the context of this scenario.

State the interval of ages for which this linear regression equation is appropriate.

Attach your Excel file to your post. Be sure that all required work is written in the text box for the discussion post.

Reply to at least two classmates’ initial posts. Choose classmates who evaluated a different data set than you did.

Recalculate their calculations. Do you agree with their calculations? Discuss any differences that you found when calculating with their data.

State and interpret the slope of their regression equation within the context of this scenario.

Submission Instructions:

Review the discussion rubric linked below.

Submit your initial post. The first post you create must contain the work that you would like to have graded. Blank posts will likely receive no credit. Your responses to the above prompts must be typed into the text box for your discussion thread. Do not leave the work only in your Excel file.

Respond to at least two of your classmates' initial posts following the instructions above.

Monitor the discussion periodically and respond to questions asked by your classmates or instructor.

WEEK 6 DISCUSSION BOARD REPLIES

Replies for Week 6 Discussion Board

Look to classmates' posts that do not fall in the name group as you. You will need to reply to two classmates and these classmates must also not be in the same name group as one another.

First, re-run their calculations and state within each post whether you agree with their calculations and interpretations.

Next, state the slope of their regression equation and interpret this value in the context of this scenario. Missing this last step will result in severe point deductions. Please be sure to address the value of the slope utilizing the context!

For this discussion, I created a scatterplot in Excel using age (years) and height (cm) and added a linear regression trendline with the equation displayed.

In this equation, the X value is age in years, and the Y value is height in centimeters. The slope of 6.6205 means that, on average, height increases by about 6.62 cm for each additional year of age. The y-intercept (73.9329) represents the predicted height when age is zero.

The correlation coefficient (r) is 0.9943, which indicates a very strong positive linear relationship between age and height. This means that as age increases, height also increases in a very consistent, linear way for this data set.

The coefficient of determination (r²) is 0.9887. This means that approximately 98.87% of the variation in height can be explained by age using this linear regression model. This shows that age is an extremely strong predictor of height using this data.

The linear regression equation is appropriate for ages between 2 and 13 years, which is the range of ages included in the data set. Using the equation outside of this interval would be extrapolation and may not produce accurate results.

The Excel file with the chart is attached.
