Overview
Assignment
Below are the main pieces I hope you will include in your presentation. Your goal is to showcase
the skills and knowledge you have learned so far and these instructions are intended to help.
While your project should do all the following, it may not all enter your presentation in the order
described below. You are the storyteller and it is your job to organize everything in the way that
makes the most sense to best explain your main points!
1. Use the website Our World In Data to find a data set on a topic you are interested in.
a. Think about a general problem or topic you are interested in learning more about.
b. You are welcome to use multiple data sets from the site if you would like, but it is
not required.
c. Download the data and upload it into Stata.
2. Describe your data
a. Use as much class terminology as you can to help tell your story.
i.
Don’t include concepts that don’t relate, but I bet there is a lot we have
covered you can emphasize!
b. Try to connect the data description to the story you are able to tell with your data
i.
This may be challenging, but the goal is to think critically about how the
information you have impacts the story you can tell!
c. Use Stata to calculate some descriptive statistics to use in your presentation.
3. Tell a story with those data
a. You can (and probably should) heavily rely on articles from the site about the
data you are working with and summarize their main points
b. Use graphs and visuals to help tell your story.i.
Use graphs from the site–they are usually really nice examples of good
graphs!
ii.
Create at least one more graph or figure in Stata to continue building your
graphing skills.
c. Be sure to emphasize what parts of your story are causal vs correlations
i.
Discuss if there are alternative explanations for what you are observing in
your data.
