I’ve been getting nonstop calls from a collector for a medical bill from a couple years back. They were calling my job and even left a voicemail telling my coworker they needed to speak to me about a "legal matter." It was humiliating.
I started researching my rights and stumbled on the Virginia Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. I guess it offers state level protections on top of the federal ones. I’m still reading through the overview here https://protectionforconsumers.com/virginia-fair-debt-collection-practices-act-overview/ but it looks like they can’t threaten to call your employer or use abusive language.
Has anyone actually used this specific state act to get a collector to back off? I want to send a cease and desist but I’m not sure if I should cite the state law or the federal one. Any advice would be appreciated.
