Week 1 Osmosis Lab Report Instructions
Week 1 Osmosis Lab Report
Materials
Obtain the following materials before starting the lab:
- 5 Gummy Bears or other gummy candies (bears are easier to measure)
- Water
- Sugar
- Salt
- Liquid of your choice (milk, vinegar, soda, etc.)
- Marker
- Metric ruler
- Pen or pencil
- 5 clear cups (large enough to contain ½ cup of liquid and the Gummy Bear)
- Aluminum foil (or other covering for glasses or jars)
- Spoon
- Paper towels
Introduction
Gummy bears are made up of gelatin which acts as a semipermeable membrane similar to the semipermeable membrane of a typical cell. In order to investigate the direction in which water moves across the membranes of the Gummy Bears in different solutions, you will place gummy bears in four different solutions. The fifth gummy bear will be the control and will not be placed in liquid.
Lab Procedure—Part 1
Label five cups #1 to #5.
Pour ½ cup of drinking water into cups #1 – #3.
Add 1 tablespoon of salt to cup #2 and stir until dissolved.
Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to cup #3 and stir until dissolved.
Add ½ cup of a liquid of your choice to cup #4.
Do not add any liquids to cup #5.
Before placing the gummy bears in the cups, measure the length, height, and width of your gummy bears in mm and record the measurements in Table 1.1. Also, measure the height of your prepared solution in each container and record it in Table 1.2 Record which type of solution you prepared for Cup #4 in the appropriate table cell.

Lab Procedure—Part 2
Now place your gummy bears in the solutions. Be sure that you track which gummy bears goes in which solution and label each cup.
- Cup #1: Place gummy bear A in one Cup #1 with water.
- Cup #2: Place gummy bear B in one Cup #2 with salt water.
- Cup #3: Place gummy bear C in Cup #3 with sugar water.
- Cup #4: Place gummy bear D in Cup #4 with the solution of your choice. You will need to identify this solution in Tables 1.1 onwards.
What do you predict will happen to each gummy bear based on what you have learned about osmosis?
Create a set of hypotheses and record them in the Hypotheses section of the Osmosis Lab Report before proceeding to Part 2 Results of the Lab Report.
Once you have placed each bear in the jar, cover the jar or glass with aluminum foil or some other airtight lid or covering so that the liquid does not evaporate.
Wait 12-24 hours, and then carefully remove the gummy bears from the jars with a spoon.
Place the gummy bears on a paper towel in front of the cup it is removed from. Make sure you do not get the gummy bears mixed up.
Record the following results:
- Observe any physical changes in the gummy bears and solutions and record your observations in the Osmosis Lab Report Part 2 Results part a.
- Record the measurements of the gummy bears after they were immersed in their respective experimental solutions for 12-24 hours in the Osmosis Lab Report Part 2 Result part b.
- Record the height of each of the experimental solutions you prepare after removing the gummy bears in the solutions hours in the Osmosis Lab Report Part 2 Results part c.
Complete the Analysis and Conclusion section of the Osmosis Lab Report. The Lab Report document is linked in the Week 1 area of the classroom.

Week 1 Osmosis Lab Report
Name: ________________________
Date: _________________________
Purpose: To apply the scientific method to observe and report on the process of osmosis and to investigate the effect of osmosis in cells in different solutions.
Directions: Please read the Osmosis Lab instructions fully before beginning your experiment. Also read the textbook passages related to osmosis before filling out the report. Use this report form to record your predictions, observations, analysis, and conclusions. Please leave the report prompts intact and simply type your responses under each prompt. Because this report form is standard, SafeAssign will flag it with a large overlap score- do not concern yourself with this issue for this report.
Hypotheses
Reflect on your readings related to osmosis and cell membranes. Consider the four solutions in which you will immerse gummy bears. Briefly explain what you think will happen to the different gummy bears under the different conditions. Record which type of solution you prepared for Cup #4 in the appropriate table cell. Be as specific and as detailed as possible. Use the understanding of osmosis that you have developed from reading the text.

- Write at least two or more paragraphs analyzing your results. Include the following:
- Describe and explain your results. How do they relate to the phenomenon of osmosis? (You may need to conduct additional independent research and cite your source.)
- State whether you obtained the results you expected and explain why you did or did not get the expected results.
- Summarize the overall knowledge you gained from this lab. How do you think your results might apply to cells generally?
- Propose an osmosis related question that would be interesting to research further.

We will process your orders through multiple stages and checks to ensure that what we are delivering to you, in the end, is something that is precise as you envisioned it. All of our essay writing service products are 100% original, ensuring that there is no plagiarism in them. The sources are well-researched and cited so it is interesting. Our goal is to help as many students as possible with their assignments, i.e. our prices are affordable and services premium.
- Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
- Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
- APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
- Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
- LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score. Week 1 Osmosis Lab Report
- Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is a 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. Week 1 Osmosis Lab Report
- Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
