Week 6 Nursing Education Evidence Based Practices

1. In your opinion, do you believe educating the nurses directly impacted by your practice change the different aspects you took into consideration when constructing your evidence-based practice project would make it easier for them to accept the change? Why or Why not?

2. (mw) Financial Aspect:

For my capstone project, a financial aspect to consider is will the implemented proposal lead to reduced cost of health care service? Ideally an outcome from addressing the opioid crisis will include less readmissions and lessen the length of stay of patients at facilities who rely on opioids which can hinder progress of post-surgical patients especially those in rehabilitation (Hsiang, et al., 2019). This would allow the facility to restructure budget, but also lower their readmission rates which provide for better statistics. Financially, something to take into account when taking into account this evidence base change of providing education to those taking opioids, the end result will yield in lower utility costs for the facility due to the issues related to those on opioids medications.

Quality Aspect:

As a result of addressing the opioid crisis, patient care quality should increase as a direct effect and put less individuals at risk for overdose and proper pain management through various means other than opioids (Farley, et al., 2019). If patient care quality increases, patients are more satisfied with the care provided to them at the facility and could also impact outside stakeholders and facility stakeholders to further invest in evidence based practices. In focusing on quality aspects of my capstone project, addressing the issue will help combat the opioid crisis.

Clinical Aspect:

What needs addressing in this regard to help implement my proposal is the education of staff so that all workers are united and understand why this implication is important for our health care setting. In providing proper education on opioid dependency, in-service sessions will be necessary to provide the same clinical outcome regarding new protocols. This will require the usage of a staff educator to train nurses, in addition to providing brochures to the patients for a quick reference should questions come to mind. As with any new implementation it’s important that the community is assessed and ready to learn as a whole.

Hsiang, W. R., Mcgeoch, C., Lee, S., Cheung, W., Becher, R., Davis, K. A., & Schuster, K. (2019). Opioid dependency is independently associated with inferior clinical outcomes after trauma. Injury, 50(1), 192–196. doi: 10.1016/j.injury.2018.10.015

3.(wL) My Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) proposal is to provide people who are struggling with opioid addiction various treatment methods that have been shown to implement lasting change on their addictive tendencies and mental health. Increasing people’s ability to the assess of different rehabs and treatment methods will ideally reduce the rates of health complications and re-hospitalization. One financial aspect to consider is the cost of the education and training sessions for the patients and their loved ones.

Since these will be provided by the agency or rehab facilities, rather than education from a hospital these costs can be minimized by getting donations or borrowing supplies from local hospitals and public health organizations and getting volunteers for the educational sessions. By having nurses and therapists volunteer to do the education sessions that take place in their area of expertise it will benefit the company in overall educational costs and expenses. There are ways to minimize the costs especially in non-profit or smaller facilities.

The quality aspect focuses on the improved care that the patient will receive from the various educators about different coping mechanisms and mental health exercises. By doing so, it also should potentially increase patient outcomes.Education will equip them to care for them selves in ways that they never knew how to and improve their safety with the goal of improved outcomes.

In the clinical aspect, the goal is to provide patient-centered education that stimulates behavior modification and assists patients to identify and resolve their addiction in a healthy manner. This form of education helps patients become much more receptive and self-aware (Moustafa, 2020).

  • Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses. GCU Week 6 Nursing Education Evidence Based Practices Discussion Responses

  • Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

  • APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

  • Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. • LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

  • Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is a 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading. GCU Week 6 Nursing Education Evidence Based Practices Discussion Responses

  • Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours. GCU Week 6 Nursing Education Evidence Based Practices Discussion Responses
