Overview
The Creative Work:
Please create a work (painting, sculpture, embroidery, collage, photograph, short video, etc.) that either addresses an issue you care about (climate change, bullying, etc.) or represents some aspect of your own life (family, identity, etc.). The sky’s the limit in terms of material, style, etc. (The only exception is that you may not simply snap a photo with your smartphone and run it through some filters. I am also not keen on high school style poster board collages. You may use an AI image generator, but in your artist statement [see below] you'll need to explain the series of prompts you used to get to your image and why it ultimately fit your vision.)
This is not a studio course. You will not be judged on your artistic abilities. Instead I'm looking for a thoughtful effort, and for you to be self-conscious about your formal choices. The idea is for you to experience the kinds of decisions about how best to convey your intended message that the artists we’ve studied have faced.
Artist’s Statement:
Along with your creative object, you'll turn in a 1-2 page, double-spaced essay explaining your artistic intent and decisions. Some questions to consider:
- What message were you trying to convey in your work?
- Why did you opt for the medium you chose?
- What further choices did you make in terms of color, composition, language, rhythm, etc., to get your message across?
- Were there particular artists or works of art we’ve studied that influenced you?
- How big a role did intuition or happy accident play in your piece?
- Where ideally would your work be displayed?
- What was the best part of this project?
- What was the most challenging or unexpected aspect?
