*Week 6 Initial Discussion*
Class, for this week please discuss the subject of nutrition as it applies to individuals who have disabilities. Use examples from your work, personal lives, practicum, and or internship. Be sure not to use names of those who are part of the example.
Then discuss consent and why it is important for those who are in the field of human services as well as those in other areas that contribute to the well-being of individuals who have disabilities. Use examples here and be sure to support your answers. Also be sure to incorporate all the material that was part of this week's topic. Explain why you believe consent is needed and if you disagree with it, state why and use support.
Follow the criteria for the course as grading is honing in on all using it correctly.
Please, do not use my references unless you have read them. In other words, you cannot use Corey et al. (2024) unless you have read that book. Use your references only.

*Week 6 Mini-Lecture*
Class, one area that is of concern when dealing with individuals who have disabilities is that of consent. That is, being able to state whether a treatment, living arrangements, education and so forth is something that they want, need, and know enough about to give their consent (Wehmeyer et al., 2017). Not all who have the same disability will share the same understanding for consent nor will they have the same treatment or plan of action (Wehmeyer, et al., 2017). The latter brings up ethical considerations as well as those of law. Ethics are standards of practice whereas law is the way a society constructs standards of behavior that have to met by its citizens (Corey, Corey, and Corey, 2024). Laws have to be followed or else penalties including incarceration, fines, and such can be levied via a court of law. Ethics are standard of practice that a field has provided for professionals to follow (Corey et al., 2024).
Some might recall what was discussed early on it the class whereby eugenics came into play even in this country with forced sterilization for one as well as institutionalization for another (Wehmeyer et al., 2017). Only within the last few decades have laws that prevent individuals who have disabilities being victimized and dealt with not only improperly but also inhumanely been enacted. Even when one is incapable of taking care of themselves for a short period of time such as when a psychotic event occurs, laws are intact that prevents their being held without due process or given treatment that they don't understand (Wehmeyer et al., 2017). The law also looks at how restraints are employed and how they have to be placed when needed to subdue a client-- this goes for both physical as well as means of medications.
Informed consent, then, is part of any individual's rights and have ethical as well as lawful considerations. However, how one goes about finding whether a person is capable of consent is complex and not an easy task. Several assessments have been utilized when considering one's understanding of what is happening with their treatment and so forth (Wehmeyer et al., 2017). For instance, if one is nonverbal, pictures can be used. For those without hearing, visual and for those who might have vision issues, there is audio. Technology has made it easier in some respects to have clients/patients understand what the treatments are. Evaluating someone who has either or both an intellectual disability or a developmental disability can be tricky and also controversial. However, informed consent is a matter for all individuals whether there are disabilities or not (Corey, Corey, and Corey, 2024).
For this week, the topic is consent and the ethics as well as laws that need to be followed when addressing whether one is capable of giving it for a variety of issues such as treatment, housing, education etc.
