Writing Question

Human factors play a central role in aviation safety by influencing how people interact with aircraft systems, procedures, and organizations. This research paper requires students to examine human factors from foundational theory through practical application across multiple aviation environments. For this research paper, you're to analyze a current or recent aviation safety issue through the lens of human factors principles, organizational and interpersonal influences, system design, and error-management strategies. The paper must integrate research, theory, and applied analysis to propose realistic safety improvements.

Instructions

Select a human factors–related aviation safety issue (e.g., fatigue, CRM breakdowns, automation dependency, maintenance error, communication failures). The paper must address all sections below and demonstrate clear alignment with Learning Outcomes 8–9.

1. Introduction and Human Factors Foundations

  • Define human factors in the aviation context
  • Discuss core human factors principles and concepts
  • Explain why human factors are critical to aviation safety

2. Human Error and System Interaction

  • Describe the SHELL model and the HFACS framework
  • Explain the major components of each model
  • Apply at least one model to your selected aviation safety issue

3. Human Performance Limitations

  • Evaluate relevant human limitations such as:
    • Fatigue and circadian rhythms
    • Sleep and fitness
    • Vision, visual illusions, or spatial disorientation
    • Loss of situational awareness
  • Explain how these factors contribute to human error

4. Organizational and Interpersonal Influences

  • Analyze the role of:
    • Motivation
    • Leadership
    • Communication
    • Attitude and persuasion
  • Explain how organizational culture influences human performance and safety outcomes

5. Crew Resource Management (CRM)

  • Explain the concept and principles of CRM
  • Illustrate how CRM is applied in one or more aviation environments:
    • Cockpit
    • Cabin
    • Maintenance
    • Air Traffic Control
  • Discuss how CRM reduces human error

6. Human-Centered Design and Work Environment

  • Summarize cockpit controls, layout, or other aviation workspaces
  • Discuss human–machine interaction
  • Explain how design features can either enhance performance or contribute to errors

7. Training, Documentation, and Error Prevention

  • Describe the role of:
    • Training programs
    • Standard operating procedures (SOPs)
    • Checklists and job aids
  • Explain how educational techniques optimize performance and reduce error

8. Integrated Analysis

  • Explain how human factors theory, organizational influences, CRM, design, and training interact
  • Discuss how breakdowns across multiple areas increase accident risk

Recommendations

  • Provide 2-3 evidence-based recommendations
  • Focus on leadership, CRM, training, and/or system design improvements
  • Recommendations must be realistic and research-supported

Conclusion

  • Summarize key findings
  • Reinforce the importance of addressing human factors holistically
