Overview
Assignment 1: The April 10, 2019 City Council hearing was the catalyst for the Elijah Cummings Healing City Act. During this hearing, a range of stakeholders testified at City Hall, sharing their perspectives on why Baltimore City should become a trauma-informed city.
I have asked you to watch the first 30 minutes of the hearing, but if you are able to, I encourage you to watch beyond that point so you can hear additional perspectives. This will give you insight into how issues are presented, advocated for, and ultimately move toward becoming law.
Be sure to also review the Elijah Cummings Healing City Act, which is located in the “Tool Kits” folder in module 3.
For this discussion, please share one key takeaway from the hearing. In addition, reflect on how you think the Healing City Act can and should impact practice, policy, and the communities you hope to serve as a future social worker.
Be sure to respond to a post that resonated with you or challenged your thinking.
Remember, this discussion must be completed by Friday at 11:59pm.
Assignment 2: Over the past few weeks, we have explored feminism, language, belonging and power and next week, we will delve into Intersectionality.
Sit with the following statements and questions:
Diversity helps us see difference.
Equity attempts to correct imbalance.
Inclusion invites belonging.
Liberation asks who had to shrink to belong.
Where do you experience ease?
Where do you experience friction?
What do you now notice that you did not notice before?
Consider how your reflections might shape your future practice as a social worker.
You are not required to respond to each question individually. Instead, choose one or two that challenged you the most. Reflect deeply. Push beyond surface responses. This is about awareness, not perfection.
SUBMISSION OPTIONS:
option 1 - If your reflection feels personal, vulnerable or is still evolving, please email your reflection to me here in Blackboard.
option 2 - if your reflection is something you feel comfortable sharing with your classmates and contributing to our collective learning, post your response to Blackboard. While you are not required to respond to another post, if you see something that resonates with you, feel free to respond but DO NOT offer advice, DO NOT judge. Your response should be based on a shared perspective.
