Overview
There are many benefits to having additional adult support in the classroom. In addition to providing access to the general education curriculum and setting, co-teaching models within an inclusive classroom can offer specialized instruction for individuals with exceptionalities and allow them more collaborative time with their peers.
In this assignment, examine station teaching and how this collaborative model can provide a better learning environment for all students, especially students with exceptionalities, and enhance independent learning and ownership of learning through reflection.
Using the “Class Profile,” complete the “Student-Centered Math Stations” template to address the following:
- Select at least one math standard from the state where you teach or where you intend to teach and write measurable learning objectives students will make progress towards during the station activity.
- Choose a grouping strategy and describe why you chose this strategy for the set of stations and students in the profile. Assign all students in the profile to one of the four groups. Be sure to consider students' needs and how they can be grouped for better support.
- Activity: Name and a short explanation of the activity. Be sure to develop one of each of the activities described on the template, including a digital/virtual activity, collaborative game, a real-world activity that promotes independent learning, and an activity using manipulatives or models.
- Directions: Step-by-step student directions you would print and leave at each station for students. Be sure directions are age appropriate.
- Mathematical Practice: List the mathematical practice(s) supported with each activity.
- Materials: A link to or a picture of each activity you created. List all materials needed for the station.
- Differentiation: List differentiation strategies that will be provided during each station to address skills and strategies that students will need to access the core curriculum, meet individualized learning needs from the class profile, and function successfully within a variety of contexts.
After completing your stations, reflect on the following in 250-500 words:
- Explain how each station promotes critical thinking, collaboration, and/or inquiry-based learning in math.
- Describe how the stations will enhance students’ independent learning and ownership of learning through reflection.
Support your findings with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
